As you may or may not be aware, a Private Members’ Bill entitled “An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act and the Parliament of Canada Act (reforms)” is being tabled by MP Michael Chong. This Bill will “give MPs the power to initiate a leadership review if they feel their leader has stepped out of line and it will put power in the hands of the party’s grassroots to nominate their local candidate without the approval of the leader. These changes are crucial for correcting the extreme power imbalance between party leaders and individual MPs.” This will give the MP’s a voice once again, no longer being forced to vote in line with the leader. A voice that will now represent their constituents, not party line.
The Green Party of Canada as well as Elizabeth May stand in favor of this bill, a step in the right direction for democracy in Canada.
